The Ukrainian company Ukrainian Armor has started mass production of the VOLS military buggy, a lightweight vehicle designed for combat missions. The company claims its facilities are capable of manufacturing hundreds of units per month, provided there are orders from the government.
The project, which began in 2022 under the leadership of engineer Volodymyr Sadyk, has already resulted in more than 190 vehicles being produced voluntarily before being incorporated by the company.
With an estimated cost of up to $20,000, the VOLS was developed to be cheaper and more agile than a pickup truck without sacrificing reliability. It can transport wounded personnel, deliver ammunition, support fast attacks, and even carry heavy weapons, such as 12.7mm machine guns.
The design includes a low profile, high ground clearance, a 500 kg payload capacity, and foldable stretchers, allowing for rapid evacuation in combat zones.
In mass production, the vehicle will be equipped with a 1.5 turbo diesel Renault K9K engine, ensuring an autonomy of over 300 km under wartime conditions. The buggy is rear-wheel drive, has a reinforced chassis for uneven terrain, and simplified maintenance thanks to a modular engine.
For the future, the company plans to develop a hybrid version with electric drive on one axle, increasing versatility for military operations.
